Readers

Are Leaders

The Readers Are Leaders program is voluntary.  The books that students read for this program must meet their lexile and grade level requirements and will also count for their graded requirements in the Reading and English classes.

Awards:  Students’ names are usually announced over the PA system after they reach each award level and will be posted on the library bulletin board.  Names are usually announced twice during each six weeks marking period.  The award levels are listed below with the deadline, the required points, and the reward given for each level.  Notice that the 75 point level for Readers are Leaders has additional requirements.

*Requirements: To qualify for Readers are Leaders, students must pass enough book tests to earn 125 points and satisfy the following reading requirements.  The book tests passed must include 15 or more books, including four books from the categories listed below.

Required

Categories:

1 Award-Winning Fiction book

(Newbery, Lone Star, Bluebonnet, or Coretta Scott King)

1 Biography or Autobiography

1 General Non-fiction or another Biography

1 History Non-fiction or Historical Fiction

When students have met these requirements, they must turn in a Readers are Leaders application form. All books must have at least 40 pages, unless the student’s reading teacher has given the student a lower requirement. A grade of 70 or above is required on each test to receive credit.  Students may retest one time if they fail a book test on their first attempt, but they must wait until the following day to retest.  Books with tests are marked with yellow stickers with the EBS emblem on them or colored tape to indicate the lexile level. As always, students are expected to read in an appropriate lexile range.  Books significantly below that range may not be counted.  Students must earn the required number of points by the deadlines posted here and in the library.
