Exemptions from the TASP Test

Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) is a state required test for students who plan to attend a Texas public College or University.  Students can be exempt from this test based on their scores on the ACT, SAT, or TAAS.

The minimum scores needed to qualify for the exemption from the TASP test are:

ACT: A composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and math test.

SAT: A combined score of 1050 with 500 minimums of both the verbal and math tests.

TAAS: A minimum score of 1770 on the writing test, and a Texas Learning Index (TLI) of 89 on reading and 86 on mathematics.

Repeating Courses

In certain instances as beneficial and desirable, a student may choose to repeat a specific course which he/she has previously completed successfully. In such cases, the student must have the prior approval of the Principal. When a course is repeated for which the student has previously received credit, the initial grade will be the only one used in calculating a student’s final grade point average and class rank. The second grade will be recorded on the transcript and will be used for eligibility purposes.

Transfer Credit

Credit earned for state approved courses and transferred from other public high schools in Texas shall receive grade points on the same basis as local courses. Courses transferred from private schools and out-of-state schools shall be reviewed by the high school counselor who shall have the responsibility, in consultation with the principal and appropriate instructional staff members, for determining the category of each course for the purpose of assigning grade points. Honors courses must be verified by transcript or official letter.

Pass/Fail Courses

No grade points shall be awarded for credit earned on a pass/fail basis. Neither shall such courses be counted in the calculation of a student’s grade point average.

Grade Classification

The number of total credits the student has earned prior to the beginning of school in the fall will determine grade level placement for that school year:

WEIGHTED GRADE POINT SYSTEM

General Description

Sweeny High School offers a diversified educational program with courses to meet the varying abilities, interests, and future plans of its students. A weighted grade point system will more accurately reflect the efforts and achievements of those students who have pursued a more rigorous and challenging program of study. Also, it will serve as an incentive to students to go beyond the minimum requirements and to strive toward higher goals throughout their school experience.
