Math and Science Team

Ken Walker & Ron Sprinkle, Sponsors

The Sweeny Math & Science team (Math Dogs) is a club that allows students to compete in four different academic areas.  These areas are number sense, calculator, general math and science.

The team members practice each Monday evening from 7-9  in room D-1 at Sweeny High School to prepare for academic tournaments.

Members:

Kevin Dugan, General Natalie Ruggles, Calculator Captain
Dru Deason, Number Sense Captain Katy Jordan
Kevin Burge Jonathan Evans

Number Sense:

Number sense is a 10 minutes, 80 problem test.  All problems must be solved mentally.  Scratch work, erasures, and mark overs are not allowed.  A perfect score is 400.  Participants receive 5 points for each correct answer and lose 4 points for each problem missed or skipped.

Jeff Sims holds the record with a score of 391 at the UIL Regional meet in 1999. The Sweeny Number Sense team won 2nd place at the UIL State meet in Austin in 1997, 3rd place in 1998, 2nd place in 2000 and 2001. Sweeny's number sense team has advanced to the regional level thirteen consecutive years dating back to 1992.

Calculator:

The Calculator Application test is a thirty minute test which consists of 35 computational problems and 35 stated/geometry solutions problems. Students receive +5 points for each correct answer and -2 points for any incorrect or skipped problems. The test is not graded beyond the last problem attempted.  The test is written by engineers to help students become familiar with the scientific functions of a calculator and to develop problem-solving skills, especially in pre-engineering fields. Good scores for freshmen are 200+, sophomores 250+, juniors and seniors, 300+

The school record is held by Jeff Sims with a score of 349 in 1999.

The Sweeny Calculator team won 3rd place at the UIL State meet in Austin in 2000 and 2nd place in 2001. The 2003 Calculator team was the Dist. 28-AAA champs. Team members were Tyler Highful, Curtis Schmidt, Jennifer Hardin and Craig Landreneau.

General Math:

The general math test is a 40 minute, 60 problem, multiple choice test.  It covers topics from arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trionometry, and calculus.  You can use scratch paper and a calculator.  A perfect score is 360.   The participant receives 6 points for each correct answer and loses 2 points for each incorrect answer.  There is no penalty for skipping.

The Sweeny General Math team won 3rd place at the State meet in Austin in 1998 and 2000, and 2nd place in 2001. The 2003 team of Craig Landreneau, Tyler Highful, Curtis Schmidt, and Dennis Chou won the 28-AAA Dist. championship.

Science:

The Science test is a two-hour, 60 problem multiple choice test.  It covers biology, chemistry, and physics.  A periodic table and several constants are given.  You can use a calculator and scratch paper.   The participant receives 6 points for each correct answer and loses 2 points for each incorrect answer.  In addition, biology, chemistry, and physics are stored separately.  Each section is worth 120 points.
